Text of introduction by Joseph Planta:

I am Planta: On the Line. This is THECOMMENTARY.CA.

Kenneth J. Harvey joins me now. The acclaimed and bestselling author has just published his newest novel, Blackstrap Hawco: Said to Be About a Newfoundland Family. It is a sprawling and ambitious book about a man and his family, very much a member of Newfoundland's working class. Blackstrap Hawco is a person-I'm reading from my notes now-named in a moment of anger, and heir to an island dominion picked over by its adoptive nation. Kenneth J. Harvey has won numerous prizes for his work, including the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. He has been nominated for the Giller, and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. Blackstrap Hawco is his 18th book; Inside was a previous book. He lives in Newfoundland, and joins me from here in Vancouver. The book is published by Random House and retails for $34.95. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Kenneth Harvey; Good morning, Mr. Harvey.
